2022 August Kesseler ‘Lorch’ Trocken QbA, Rheingau, Germany

When August Kesseler took over his parents’ establishment, which was founded in 1924, he was only 19 years old. Traditionally, mostly bulk wine was produced and the vineyard area was just over six acres. Today, under August’s guidance, the estate has become one of the flagship producers of the Rheingau area and has also acquired an impressive international reputation. The estate spans 80 acres of vineyards located in some of the best Rheingau sites, such as Assmannshäuser, Höllenberg, Rüdesheim Berg, Schlossberg and many more. They produce 60% Riesling and 40% Pinot Noir and are a member of the VDP and the German Barrique-Forum as well as being rated 5-Stars by Falstaff

August has swiftly gained a reputation for world class Riesling. In his own words “I am a Mosel Fan, I like light-ness and drinkability in the wines." The style of the wines are something of a halfway between Mosel and Rheingau Rieslings, they retain great lightness of touch to go with their innate power.

Why do we like it?

August Lorch is a dry style of Riesling with pure aromas of acacia, lemon and lime sherbet and some almond flowers on the nose. It’s got such a lovely elegance. A touch of peach sweetness on the palate entry, then builds to a spicy, pithy dry finish that leaves a persistent, tangy, citrus perfume on the palate.
