Château Carbonneau sits in Sainte-Foy, in the eastern reaches of the Bordeaux appellation — a historic, family-run estate that farms its vineyards organically. The property takes pride in expressing the character of this lesser-known but quietly excellent corner of Bordeaux, where the soils and gentle climate suit Merlot and the two Cabernets beautifully.
Séquoia is named after the stately sequoia tree that stands on the estate's grounds. The 2022 vintage is a blend dominated by Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon adding structure, aged in wood to build complexity and longevity.
Why do we like it?
A solid, firm and powdery blend with berries, graphite and warm spice mingling on the nose, following through to a medium body and a chewy, serious finish. Rich tannins and dark blackberry fruit are laced with brisk acidity, giving the wine a structured, age-worthy edge from organically grown fruit. Give it a couple of years in the cellar to soften and it will reward you with real Bordeaux character at a very fair price.
