2022 Meadowbank, Gamay, Derwent Valley, Tasmania

Gerald Ellis started planting vines in his farm from 1976 onwards. At this point some would tell him it’s not possible to grow grapes here in the fierce cold of Tasmania “too wild, too unpredictable, too ‘at the edge of the world’ it can’t be done”. And this would have all been right, except for the fact that Gerald ignored all the naysayers and pursued his dream. Today the wines are made by Gerald’s daughter Mardi Ellis alongside winemaker Peter Dredge, known for being part artist, part scientist and total legend!

Why do we like it?

Some of the Gamay vines were planted in 1987, and the latest ones in 2015. Made with minimal intervention to truly reflect the vineyard site. Fruit is allowed to spontaneously ferment on its whole bunch for 10 days, then foot crushed for 4 days. From here is moved to old French oak barrels and left to mature for 3 months. The wines are unfined, unfiltered and totally preservative free.

This is a delicious Gamay, it is bright, light in style, with tart red fruit such as strawberry, red cherry, raspberry, and cranberry. There are also some beautiful floral aromas of lilacs and even a light touch of savoury herbs. This is a Gamay that drinks like a great Cru Beaujolais.
