2022 Ostertag, Sylvaner, Vielles Vignes, Alsace, France

André Ostertag is both a revolutionary winemaker and a dedicated environmentalist, bringing artistry and passion to his Alsace vineyard. After training in Burgundy, he returned to his family estate with innovative techniques, significantly reducing yields and introducing methods from other regions. In 1997, he embraced biodynamic practices across his 14 hectares, including his celebrated Muenchberg Grand Cru parcel. Ostertag categorizes his wines by character rather than traditional A.O.C. classifications: Vins de Fruit highlight fruit over terroir, Vins de Pierre focus on soil-driven flavours, and Vin de Temps rely on climate to develop botrytis. His wines are typically dry, enhancing their food-pairing versatility. Ostertag’s approach reflects a commitment to natural, expressive winemaking, distinguishing his wines as some of the most dynamic and complex in Alsace.

Why do we like it?

Because we are introducing you to Sylvaner grape, a speciality of Alsace, it’s often forgotten and not much is being produced in the region. At Domaine Ostertag, the Sylvaner vines average age 55 years. The Sylvaner Vieilles Vignes is a signature of the estate, reveals expressive notes of peach, ginger, and thyme with a rich and rounded texture.
