2023 Roland Schmitt, Grand Cru Glintzberg Riesling, Alsace

Roland Schmitt Wines has a rich history rooted in Alsace, where the Schmitt family has been cultivating vines since the early 17th century. Roland Schmitt himself began working the vineyards at the age of fourteen and took over the estate in his early twenties alongside his wife, Anne-Marie. After a tragic car accident in 1993 claimed Roland's life, Anne-Marie managed the estate with the help of a loyal employee and their teenage sons. Today, Anne-Marie, along with her sons Julien and Bruno, continue to uphold the domaine's reputation for high-quality wines, employing organic farming techniques and traditional vinification methods.

Why do we like it?

It comes from 30-year-old vines grown on clay-marl soils with gypsum fragments, contributing to its distinctive freshness. The wine displays a bright, crystalline yellow hue with green reflections. On the nose, it offers floral and mineral notes alongside ripe fruit aromas, white peach, and ripe apple plus some citrus such as lemon and lime. The palate is crisp, dry, and well-structured, with a subtle, deep framework, vibrant acidity, and a saline finish that reflects the terroir.
