2022 Valdesil Montenovo, Godello, Galicia, Spain

Valdesil produces wine exclusively from the oldest plots of land in Valdeorras. These vineyards are located in very high altitude, the highest in Galicia, where pure black slate rock can be found. It is a standard bearer of so-called extreme viticulture. Godello is a fine white grape variety native to north west Spain and northern Portugal rescued from near extinction in the 1980s. It is responsible for well-structured, tense dry whites in Valdeorras especially, although dna profiling suggested that it is identical to a Portuguese variety known as Gouveio in the Douro and also in Dão.

Why do we like it?

The winery stands as a top producer of the grape. Their Montenovo label, is a great gem, these vines, averaging 15 years, originate from mass selection vines, descendants of Spain's oldest and most robust Godello vines found in Valdesil’s Pedrouzos vineyard, aged over 130 years. Fermented with wild yeasts and nurtured in stainless steel, the wine doesn’t disappoint, it’s bursting with citrus, smoking tones, and white floral nuances, it shows great harmony with chalky minerality, a vibrant acidity, and a crisp, invigorating finish.
