2023 Domaine des Ardoisières Silice Rouge, Savoie, France

Domaine des Ardoisières was founded in 1997 from revived abandoned vineyards in Cévins, Savoie, under a legend: Michel Grisard. His legacy was taken over by with Brice Omont in 2008. The 16 hectares estate, named for its slate-roofed cabins, grows local varieties on steep, mica-schist slopes. Biodynamic since its inception, it emphasizes low yields and terroir purity. Simply put, this is one of the stars of the region and we are blessed that it found its way in Australia!

 Why do we like it?

The Silice Rouge is made 100% from Mondeuse grapes. Sometimes remisniscent to Pinot Noir, it’s even lighter in style, and worth noticing is that Syrah is a cousin of the grape. The wine is light-bodied, with vibrant wild strawberry, violet, and peppery notes, balanced by a tangy, mineral-driven palate and Alpine freshness. The wine’s flinty, schist-influenced terroir shines through, offering a Beaujolais-like zip with Syrah’s floral spice. Vinified with whole-cluster fermentation and native yeasts, it’s aged in fiberglass for nine months, bottled with minimal sulfur level.
