2023 Gerard Boulay, Sancerre Rose ‘Sybille’, Loire Valley, France

The Boulay family has been cultivating the land in Chavignol since at least 1380, predating even the Dagueneau family’s presence (another Loire Vally legend). Gérard Boulay, the current steward of the estate, is renowned for producing some of Sancerre’s most distinctive wines. His focused, intense approach mirrors the quality of his wines, yet he remains humble. Boulay’s respect for Chavignol’s history is evident in his commitment to traditional, non-industrial practices that honour the terroir. Under his guidance, the land’s natural quality shines without the need for correction. The Boulay family, with its centuries-old winemaking legacy, has shaped the story of Chavignol. Boulay works primarily with old vines, planted using massale selection on quality rootstocks and at a higher density than most Sancerre vineyards, with 7,500 vines per hectare.

Why do we like it?

Summer is around the corner and we thought it was time to select a high quality rose for the hot days coming soon. And yes, you can make rose in Sancerre and they are stunning! The new release from Gerard is busted with mineral tones and lots of red berries, juicy, mouthwatering watermelon, mint and orange peel. The palate is pure silk, with an array of pretty red fruit and grape-skin flavours punctuated by crunchy freshness. Great length, too.
