2019 Tinto Pesquera 'Reserva Especial', Ribera del Duero

Yes, the famous wine critic Robert Parker called Alejandro Fernandez Tinto Pesquera 1982 the Spanish Château Petrus”. Taking the winery to new fame ever since! It is a legendary winery in Spain, more precisely in Ribera del Duero. In 1972, Alejandro and his wife decided to purchase land in Pesquera del Duero, west of Valladolid, at that time, the only notable winery was simply Vega Sicilia. The resonance of the claim made by Robert Parker helped establish the reputation of the new DO, nationally and internationally. Using the success he had with his wines, Alejandro continued to purchase wineries such as Condado de Haza and Dehesa la Ganja, creating an impressive range of wines made with a traditional approach.

Why do we like it?

The Reserva Especial is made 100% from old vines of Tempranillo coming from vineyards with poor soils and a perfect south exposure at an altitude of 800m. The team famously dropped half of the fruit to reduce the yields producing a wine of great magnitude and complexity. Regarding aging, it goes through a long 24 to 30 months in oak, followed by 12 months in the bottle. The Especial label is reserved for wines that have been aged in bottle a little longer before released, in this case 10 years to be precise! It is of great depth and aromas. Very classic in a way with a little farmyard, earthy, leather and tertiary notes. It's such the quintessence of Ribera with ripe black fruits, sweet tannins and freshness to balance the palate, a superb example of a traditional style from the region!
