2015 Evoi 'The Satyr' Reserve, Cabernet blend, Margaret River

The man behind the project is Nigel Ludlow, a New Zealander who has a graduate diploma in oenology and viticulture from Lincoln University. After working for Selaks, Nigel became what we call a flying winemaker, working around the world in countries such as Hungary, Spain and South Africa before settling in Australia, working in Victoria and then moving to Margaret River. Nigel started Evoi with almost nothing, or should we say with two barrels of Chardonnay made at his home in Margaret River in 2007. Fast forward and Nigel now make some exemplary wines from Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Everything is possible, if you have a dream, simply follow it!

Why do we like it?

The Satyr is a blend made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Verdot and Malbec as the other partner in crime. The grapes are fermented as small parcels with manual punch downs, the mainly free run must finish ferment in French barriques. Little details that make a big difference at the end. At 8 years of age, The Satyr is in an incredible shape, you can still age it for sure, but we love the combination of ripe blackcurrant, dawson, violet with layers of dried eucalyptus leaves, tobacco and subtle touch of vanilla and leather that it offers now.
