2019 Bindi 'Quartz' Chardonnay, Macedon Ranges

Michael Dhillon of Bindi is a legend in the wine business, a true gentleman and one of the most respected winemaker in Australia. The family property was originally purchased in the 1950s, it is a 170 hectares farm of which 7 hectares are planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir located 50 kilometres north-west of Melbourne in the Macedon Ranges.

It is a very cool area with native forest and noticeable mountains with vineyards located between 300 and 800m of altitude. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz, and sparkling wine are the specialties of the region. Most of the wines are made by family-owned producers who make small amounts of wine of which Bindi is one of the very best!

Why do we like it?

Quartz is a stunning Chardonnay made from vines planted in 1988 on soil with a high quartz component. It sees 12 months in French oak with only one-third new. It is one of the most complex and age worthy Chardonnay made in Australia. Very obvious yellow apple, apple blossom and floral quality on the noise follow by a leesy, biscuity and toasted character, all very well integrated with the fruits flavours. The finish is simply stunning, showing great depth and length!
