2022 Domaine Chermette “Les Griottes”, Beaujolais

It’s rare to see Pierre-Marie without a smile on his face, a happy chap, that makes meaty wines, savoury and delicious. And why shouldn’t he be happy? Pierre-Marie Chermette has close to forty successful vintages under his belt, and he has recently been joined by their son Jean-Étienne.

Beaujolais can be the most joyful, compelling and life-affirming of wines. Yet in the hands of a master, it can also be a wonderfully refined, long-lived Burgundy. Domaine Chermette is a producer capable of fashioning such wines, since the 1980s delivering wines created with minimal intervention, wild ferments, and unfiltered. His wines helped raise the bar considerably and left a lasting influence on the region.

Why do we like it?

Chermette’s Beaujolais is drawn from 30 to 40 year-old vines grown on dark granite soils around the homestead in Saint-Vérand (in southern Beaujolais). The winemaking here has remained unchanged for decades, with traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks and then maturation in both tank and ancient oak casks still the order of the day. We love this style of wines, they are very versatile and they bring plenty of joy to a table of food! From rich fatty fishes such as salmon to light meats such as poultry or charcuterie.
