Adega Algueira is one of the defining names of Ribeira Sacra, the dramatic, terraced wine region carved into the steep slopes above Galicia's Sil River in northwest Spain. Founded by Fernando González Riveiro, the estate has spent decades championing native Galician grape varieties on vineyards so steep that some exceed an 80% gradient — vines that simply cannot be farmed by machine.
Why do we like it?
Amaral is Algueira's single-varietal expression of Caíño, a rare native red grape fermented as whole bunches — stems included — then aged for up to 18 months in chestnut and French oak. The result is a wine of real character: ripe red fruit, spice and noble wood aromas, with a structured, intense palate and long, persistent finish. This is Ribeira Sacra at its most distinctive, a world away from the mainstream Spanish reds most people know.
