Greywacke was founded by Kevin Judd, the legendary winemaker who put Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc on the world map during his 25 years as head winemaker at Cloudy Bay. After striking out on his own, Judd set about proving that Marlborough Sauvignon could be something far more serious and complex than the simple, zesty style the region became famous for.
Why do we like it?
Wild Sauvignon is Judd's answer to that challenge — fermented with wild yeast in old oak barrels, a deliberate departure from the stainless-steel, tank-fermented style that defines most Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. This Archive Release has been cellared at the winery, giving the wine extra time to develop real complexity: think ripe stone fruit, lanolin, toasty oak and a savoury, textural palate that's a world away from typical New Zealand Sauvignon. A genuinely thought-provoking wine from one of the country's most respected winemakers.
