2022 Koerner ‘Rolle’ Vermentino, Clare Valley

Damon and Jono Koerner are two brothers who are making some of the most appealing and great value wines in South Australia. Deservedly so, in 2019, they won the Young Guns of Wine. The two grew up in the Clare Valley and for many years have learnt the art of growing grapes and making wines alongside their parents: Anthony and Christine Koerner. But they also have spent time working and living overseas as well, in Italy and France, they fell in love with Mediterranean varieties and a preference for unoaked, lighter wines. In Australia, the two have been at the forefront of the use of ceramic eggs for fermentation resulting in refreshing wines of incredible drinkability!

Why do we like it?

Vermentino (also call Rolle) is an attractive, semi-aromatic white grape variety widely grown in northwestern Italy, Sardinia, and to a limited extent in Corsica, and in southern France. Let's say that the idea of making Vermentino didn't come as a surprise for Jono, after making wines in Corsica, it was an obvious choice to make it in Australia. It’s a fabulous wine, after a brief skin contact, the wine will be fermented in a mix of old oak and ceramic eggs for 6 months. It has great aromatics of fresh lemon, white grapefruit, acacia flower and a saline finish.
