2014 Pedro Balda “Majuelo de la Nava” Rioja, Spain

Pedro Balda is a producer from the Rioja region in Spain, known for his dedication to crafting wines that express the terroir of his small plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Pedro, who was once a Doctor by the University of La Rioja, transitioned to winemaking, focusing on organic viticulture and traditional methods. His winery's ethos revolves around minimal intervention, with a particular emphasis on the quality of the vineyard work. He works with very old vines, often over 90 years, which are a testament to his respect for the land and the history of Rioja winemaking.

 Why do we like it?

"Majuelo de la Nava" by Pedro Balda is a Tempranillo-based wine from a tiny, meticulously tended plot in Rioja. This wine showcases the essence of old-vine Tempranillo, with grapes harvested at different times to produce two different cuvées from the same vineyard - one from looser bunches and another from more compact ones, leading to nuanced expressions of the same terroir. The wine undergoes a careful vinification process, including fermentation with indigenous yeasts and aging in French oak for 14 months, followed by time in stainless steel, which contributes to its balance, depth, and integrated acidity.
