2022 Vinos en Voz Baja ‘Barrio Pastores’ Rioja, Spain

Vinos en Voz Baja is a winery rooted in the historic wine region of Rioja Oriental, specifically in the village of Aldeanueva de Ebro. It's a project spearheaded by Carlos Mazo and his wife, Isabel Ruiz, who are first-generation winemakers focusing on crafting wines that resonate with the traditional essence of the area while embracing modern, low-intervention techniques. Their philosophy centers around using old vine Garnacha, along with other local varieties like Pasera and Tempranillo. Their wines showcase finesse and elegance, earning them recognition such as Carlos Mazo being named 'Young Winemaker of the Year' in 2023 by Tim Atkin.

Why do we like it?

'Barrio Pastores' from Vinos en Voz Baja is a village wine made solely from old Garnacha vines grafted onto Rupestris du Lot roots, harvested from two plots in Aldeanueva de Ebro. The winemaking process involves foot-treading the whole bunches to preserve the grape's integrity and fermenting in large oak vats, which imparts a lighter wood influence, allowing the fruit to shine. This wine is aged for 10 months in these vats, resulting in a wine that's perfumed, floral, and medium-bodied with fine tannins and an austere yet happy finish. The taste profile includes notes of strawberry, red cherry, and a touch of earthiness, making it both elegant and approachable
