Domaine de Montcalmès was established in 1998 by Frédéric Pourtalié and his father in the village of Montcalmès, 30km north-west of Montpellier in the sector of Terrasses du Larzac in the Languedoc region. Frédéric was trained at his neighbour La Grange des Pères (yes, France has his own Grange too!), which is one of the most iconic wines made in France and the most premium wine of the Languedoc. Another address worth mentioning as a mentor is the superstar Alain Graillot in Crozes-Hermitages.
After learning from those domaines, the path was cleared, the region was suited for their ambition of making great wines. The first vintage gave birth to only 5000 bottles in 1999, nowadays, 50,000 bottles are produced (which is still very tiny) of well-crafted wines showing great typicity and elegance.
Why do we like it?
The 2019 vintage made of a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre is sumptuous. The long aging of 24 months in used barrels has bought the wine to another dimension. Silky texture, smooth tannins with ripe blackberry, black pepper and garrigue herbs note and superb length. A great vintage in that part of France that you could enjoy now or age a bit in your cellar for a further 5 to 10 years.
