2020 John Duval ‘Eligo’ Shiraz, Barossa Valley, Australia

John Duval is simply a legend in Australia, he is one of the ex-Penfolds Grange winemakers (only 4 have ever held that job). In 2003, he decided to go solo and launched his label after 29 years shaping iconic Australian reds. Eligo, meaning “to choose” in Latin, debuted in 2005, showcasing top-tier Shiraz parcels. The 2020 vintage, marked by low yields, demanded careful tannin management, yielding a concentrated yet harmonious wine.

Why do we like it?

The 2020 John Duval Eligo Shiraz, a Barossa Valley gem, is a meticulous blend of 53% Barossa Valley and 47% Eden Valley Shiraz from old vines. It boasts a deep ruby hue, with intense aromas of blackberry, plum, anise, and dark chocolate, laced with baking spice. The palate is richly textured, delivering plush dark fruit, licorice, and graphite-like tannins, finishing with fine, grippy structure. Aged 18 months in French oak (51% new), it balances power and elegance, you could age that wine for the next 10-15 years easily.
