2021 Lake Folly ‘Cabernets’ Hunter Valley, Australia

Founded in 1963 by Dr. Max Lake, Lake's Folly was the first new vineyard to emerge in the Hunter Valley during the last century. In the early 2000s, Peter and Lee Fogarty, along with their family, acquired the property and have worked closely with local winemaker Rodney Kempe to uphold the vineyard's integrity and vision. Lake's Folly Cabernets is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Shiraz, crafted from low-yielding, hand-harvested fruit grown on the estate. The grapes undergo open fermentation, resulting in softer and more nuanced tannins. After fermentation, the wine is aged in large old casks for six months to allow for settling, followed by approximately a year in small French oak barriques, which may be new or one- to two-years-old, before bottling. It offers excellent potential for long-term cellaring, with a lifespan of up to 20 years depending on the vintage.

 Why do we like it?

This is a wine with deep purple hues that stain the glass at each swirl. Its aromas weave fragrances of black fruits, purple flowers, and a strong note of dark chocolate and grinded coffee beans. It’s a wine that will reward the patients as it ages. This wine is an embodiment of time itself, evolving and maturing gracefully with each year passing. Nevertheless, if you do enjoy a bit of a punch – enjoy it now, it is big and bold but elegant and creamy.
