2022 Glaetzer Amon-Ra Shiraz, Barossa Valley, Australia

The Glaetzer family have been in the Barossa Valley since 1888, but with Colin Glaetzer the vision of producing super premium Barossa valley wines became more serious, especially with 30 years of winemaking experience. Today though it is Ben, Colin’s son, who is in charge of making these elegant wines with huge finesse, but unmistakably South Australian Barossa. The name Anaperenna has been inspired by Anna Perenna, the Roman goddess of the New Year. Her name symbolises the year’s cycle and it translates to ‘enduring year’. What a name for a generous, refined and with a very long finish wine made from vines between 30-100 years old Shiraz and 30-130 years old Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from the Ebenezer sub district at the Northern tip of the Barossa Valley, the yields are super low at 2.5 hectares per hectare; so naturally, very small production.

Why do we like it?

A powerful yet elegant Shiraz which boasts an inky purple hue, with intense aromas of blackberry, cassis, and black pepper. The palate is full-bodied, revealing rich black plum, dried spice, and mocha, framed by supple tannins and a long, refined finish. Matured 16 months in new French oak, it’s unfiltered to preserve its bold character, with cellaring potential for decades.
