Elisabetta Foradori is widely considered the most important biodynamic producer in northern Italy, and her single-vineyard Teroldego wines from the Campo Rotaliano are some of the most sought-after expressions of the variety in the world. Sgarzon is named for its vineyard — a small, 2.5-hectare site on sandier, cooler-climate soils than the estate's flagship blend, certified biodynamic by Demeter.
Why do we like it?
Sgarzon is the most delicate and lifted of Foradori's Teroldego wines, fermented and aged on skins for eight months in clay amphorae sourced from Spain. The cooler site and sandy soils bring an unusual freshness and lighter, more perfumed character — think red fruit, rose petal aromatics, and a fine, soft tannic structure with a slightly saline finish. For those who love Pinot Noir and similarly elegant red styles, this is a fascinating, distinctly alpine alternative.
