2016 Chateau Lafon-Rochet, St-Estèphe, Bordeaux

The golden-yellow exterior of Château Lafon-Rochet can be seen from afar as one ascends Bordeaux’s D2 road, which winds through some of the greatest Médoc vineyards. It is a colour that is both bold and warm, reflecting those who play a part in the making of its wines, who are guided by commitment and passion. Lafon Rochet is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux, and specifically St-Estèphe., with origins dating back to the 16th century. Today owned by the Lorenzetti family, which also owns Château d’Issan, Château Pédesclaux and Château Lilian Ladouys (Insane arsenal of wines on the portfolio).

Why do we like it?

The 2016 was made of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, all hand harvested out of the 40 hectares planted in deep gravel soils. Vines are on average 30 years of age. It has a remarkable strength and length providing much elegance. Tannins are firm but silky. Palate is packed with black-fruit, graphite, pencil shaving, leather, and tobacco! A true Bordeaux classic. Ready to drink, but with this fresh vintage, you can keep for at least 10 years. Open, decant it, serve at 16 degrees in large Bordeaux glasses.
