Located in Castilla-la-Mancha, south central of Spain, this is dry land! Intense ripeness, powerful wines with character. Mas Que Vinos is a joint venture between 3 friends, all winemakers that started a friendship in Rioja in 1998. Three different philosophies, and experiences.
Together they grow 35 hectares of vineyard ecologically farmed of old bush vines, some with over 80 years of age. The region is known for extreme climate conditions in which days are extremely hot, but nights are extremely cold allowing for grapes to shut down over night. Altitude of the vineyards sits at about 750 metres high with limestone and clay soils.
This 2018 is a limited edition of a 100% Cencibel (local synonym for Tempranillo), all hand harvested, cold macerated for 2 days to preserve fruit aromas, then allowed for a spontaneous fermentation in small stainless-steel tanks. Malolactic (the gentle transformation of sharp high acids of the wine into gentle, rounder acids) was done in amphorae clay pots adding an insane tannin structure to the wine. Then finally matured for 9 months in French barrels again adding more layers of flavours.
Why do we like it?
With 5 years of age, is at a beautiful place to be drunk. Ripe and big style of wine in body, yet elegant, silky and smooth tannins on the palate. Plenty of fruit balanced with hearthy mushroom and tobacco aromas.
