2019 Casa Castillo 'Las Gravas', Jumilla

Casa Castillo is a wonderful discovery! It is located in Jumilla, which is a very under-rated wine region in Spain in the south-east of Spain. It is quite hot, with over 300 days of sunshine on average, but the key is high altitude and a cooling influence from the Mediterranean. Jose Maria Vincente and his father replanted the whole property with native varietals in 1985. Here, he rediscovered the secret of a native grape call Monastrell (known as Mourvedre in France and Mataro in Australia).

Their low-density bush vines give tiny yields in the climate conditions you find in the area. Castillo is so unique in the style they give to their wine that over the past decade, the wines have evolved to become an incredibly elegant and precise interpretation of Monastrell.

Why do we like it?

It is a wine that comes from a vineyard planted on a blanket of broken gravel and limestone. It is simply incredible, each variety is fermented separately and aged for 15 months in old oak foudres, then blended before bottling. This is a brilliant combination of warmth and sensuality. The delicate blackberry and black plum fruits are combined with earth, pine, dried mushrooms and earthy flavours. The wine shows a certain rusticity but it is fluid with a lot of depth and a fabulous finish. It is unlike any modern Monastrell made in the area and that’s why we really love it!
