2021 Pietraventosa “Volere Volare” Primitivo, Puglia

Pietraventosa was founded in 2005, a small Plugian (south of Italy) wine estate making a little amount of wine every year. Located at 380 metres above sea level on the cooler, fractured limestone knoll of Gioia del Colle, prized for the quality of its Primitivo grapes. The estate is owned by local girl Marianna Annio & her husband Raffaele, an engineer specializing in fermentation tanks! The vineyards are mostly planted with Primitivo with a hectare of Aglianico, it’s all organic and everything is done to make the most delicious wines possible. Harvest is by hand, small yields applied here, ensuring enough concentration in the grapes at harvest.

Why do we like it?

The ‘Volere Volare’ is a 100% Primitivo (same grape as Zinfandel, which is how they call it in the US), fermented only in stainless steel followed by a further 2 months, the production is approximately 7000 bottles! The nose is an inviting bouquet of ripe blackberries, plums, and cherries, combined with hints of vanilla, sweet spices, and a touch of smokiness. The palate is lush and velvety with concentrate flavours and smooth tannins.
